Pompeii and Herculaneum are historic sites known for their vast amounts of sexual content found throughout the towns, whether it be the numerous brothels, penises found on the footpaths or the extensive amount of erotic art and sculptures found in houses and buildings located in these cities affected by the eruption.
There are numerous paintings that are famous for their sexual and explicit content in Pompeii and Herculaneum but some of the most famous paintings that have been found through excavations were the paintings found in the brothels throughout the cities, including paintings found in the Lupanar Brothel in Pompeii. This brothel is the most famous brothel found in Pompeii
displaying some of the most famous pieces of erotic art found on its walls. The numerous pieces of erotic art that is located on the walls of this brothel are
not believed to have been the services provided by the women working, but merely a picture to entertain the numerous customers that visited the brothels,
particularly the Lupanar. Like majority of the erotic artwork discovered in Pompeii during the initial excavations, the artwork was hidden away from the public as the King and the excavators believed it was too inappropriate, and concealed many pictures until centuries later when they were rediscovered in modern times.
The Mt Vesuvius eruption was a significant event as it preserved the erotic art that tells us what was deemed acceptable sexually in Ancient Rome. The eruption occurred in a time where Romans still believed in gods and goddesses who were very sexually active and had many lovers and numerous affairs, before Christianity became the prominent and main religion during the Empires reign. The Erotic art preserved by the eruption escaped being defaced and ruined as it went against the codes of practices in Christianity and shows how people acted in Ancient Rome before the rise of Christianity. The eruption of Mt Vesuvius was also significant because it gives insight to archaeologists and historians of the vast amounts of erotic art that was found throughout Pompeii and Herculaneum, and in no other Ancient Roman town, telling us how normal it was for the Ancient Romans to display throughout their homes, very different to society when the artworks were first found in during initial excavations and today’s society also which would be deemed very pornographic.
